The Chicago Bears’ productive offseason has this franchise believing they can break their four-year playoff drought. To accomplish this feat, Caleb Williams will need to take the next step in his development and avoid any kind of sophomore slump.
The early reports from mandatory minicamps and OTAs are very encouraging for the second-year quarterback. And Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport named Williams as one of the biggest winners from OTAs. The NFL analyst detailed what head coach Ben Johnson thinks of his new quarterback’s progression over the past few weeks.
“While talking to reporters, new Bears head coach Ben Johnson said that Williams is taking advantage of every rep he can get under center—and doing a good job of picking up the team’s new offensive scheme.
‘He's committed to learning the offense. We're not where we need to be yet as a team. He understands that. Any chance he gets to get a few more full-speed reps, sounds like he wants them. There’s always a throw or two every single day. The movement stuff outside of the pocket, it’s what we thought coming into town here, the ability to create.’”
Williams will have to be in form early this season with the Bears’ demanding schedule. Ten of Chicago’s games are against teams that made the playoffs last season, and several of those teams enter 2025 with realistic Super Bowl-or-bust expectations.
The Bears have the talent to clinch their first winning season since 2018, and if that happens, their quarterback’s progression will be the main reason why.
