Caleb Williams has been at the center of training camp news around the NFL as the second-year Chicago Bears quarterback works on grasping the offense under Ben Johnson. Nonetheless, on Thursday, a positive update was that Williams was trending in the right direction.
Bears beat reporter for 670 The Score, Chris Emma, shared the latest from Chicago's training camp, which are good signs from Williams in practice as the team prepares for their second preseason game on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
"It was maybe one of his best days yet in camp," Emma said. "He had a very strong day overall, sharp in seven-on-seven and connecting multiple times with Olamide Zaccheaus. He and Rome Odunze are in lockstep right now.
"They ran an end-of-game drill to close our practice, ones against ones. He led the downfield two connections to Rome Odunze, the last of which set up spiking the football, setting up a game-winning kick situation."

The 23-year-old's most talked-about moment during training came during a fast-paced throwing challenge, where he had to hit targets in a net. Williams struggled with accuracy, and his emotional reaction drew plenty of attention. However, on this day, there were signs of growth were evident during the practice, as Emma noted.

"It was a day of progress, and we keep hearing the coaching staff talking about, 'We want to see growth. We want to see growth,'" Emma added. "Today was growth on display, and it's not just the stuff that they're looking for. It's the results, clear as day to everybody there. So, a very good day for the quarterback, a good day for this first-team."
Heading into Year 2 under a new head coach, Williams faces pressure to take the next step in his development—especially with an offensive-minded coach like Johnson, who helped Jared Goff find his footing with the Detroit Lions.
Williams and his teammates must continue ironing out the challenges of learning a new offense during practice and the preseason. Despite concerns, the team appears to be heading on the right path, which is a good sign as Week 1 nears.
