There was the viral preseason video of Caleb Williams missed a close-range target with a throw and being frustrated. And now there's the footage of his overthrow of Rome Odunze on a probable touchdown from Monday night.
Williams has shown himself to be at least a little erratic with his accuracy, and that's not something the Chicago Bears want from their 2024 No. 1 overall pick. But there's even a stat that shows that Williams might continue to struggle with such quarterback woes.
NFL content producer Dov Kleiman shared on X that Williams leads the NFL since entering the league in incompletions due to an overthrow.
Williams has 52 in the timeframe. Next closest is Bo Nix, with 35.

Here's the list:
Uh Oh: Since Caleb Williams joined the NFL, he leads all QBs with 52 incompletions due to an overthrow.

17 more than the next highest Bo Nix...😬 pic.twitter.com/cduLnJPboe
Someone could quickly make the case that, oh look, Patrick Mahomes is third in this category, it's not all bad.

And it truly isn't all bad. There are times when QBs know that they might want to throw the ball a bit on the overthrown side to prevent a defender's access to it. Conversely, though, underthrown footballs can have merit, too.
And besides, Williams is so far ahead of everyone else on that list, who ended up sort of bunched together. Clearly, Williams is making this error at a rate no one else is.
Is it fixable? Probably. Mechanics, decision-making and timing can all help Williams out with this issue.
But it's not the kind of stat you want to lead the league in, that's for sure.
