Why Gabe Davis is back with Bills despite long-term contract with Jaguars image

Gabe Davis wasn't gone long.

When he departed the Buffalo Bills for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the spring of 2024, it was for a three-year, $39 million contract. It seemed that was that in Buffalo for Big Game Gabe.

But 14 months later, the Jaguars released Davis.

He then signed with the Bills, for whom he spent most of the season on the practice squad before making his 2025 debut on Sunday and catching three passes for 40 yards.

It's definitely not the path Davis or the Bills were expecting, but they're surely glad to be reunited.

Why did Gabe Davis leave the Bills for the Jaguars?

Davis had played four seasons with the Bills and was going after a big free agent deal.

The Bills, meanwhile, were embracing an "everyone eats" mentality in their receiving corps.

So before the 2024 season, Davis signed with the Jags instead of the Bills.

Why did the Jaguars get rid of Gabriel Davis?

He had a rough 2024 campaign with the Jaguars. He played in only 10 games due to injury, and in those contests, he totaled just 20 catches.

That injury is in part why the Jags cut Davis just 14 months after signing him. He went into free agency, where the Bills eventually signed him back.

Why didn't Gabe Davis played until Week 11?

Davis wasn't fully recovered from injury when he was signed.

The Bills signed him before the season opener, but he needed time to continue to recover.

Buffalo also has a crowded WR group, so it wasn't easy for Davis to break in anyway.

Gabe Davis stats with Bills

In his original four seasons with the Bills, Davis had 163 catches for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in the regular season.

Big Game Gabe caught at least one touchdown in three consecutive playoff games between 2022-23, including that eight catch, 201 yard, four TD bonanza against the Chiefs.
