Why Bills brought back Jordan Poyer for free agent reunion in Buffalo image

The Buffalo Bills are in a reunion sort of mood.

In the last week, they've signed both Jordan Poyer and Gabe Davis, a pair of old friends.

Poyer's signing came first, late last week, and it was quite the surprise. It wasn't clear whether the free agent safety was even looking for another opportunity.

But Poyer, who spent seven years in Buffalo, found a chance to return to the Bills.

“This is where my heart is,” Poyer told reporters last Thursday. “It’s where home is, where I essentially grew up in this game. On and off the field. My daughter’s grown up in this town, this city. And I feel like this is a way for me to give back to the community, to this team. I feel like I can still give back to the game in many ways, whether that be on the field or off the field.”

Why the Bills signed Jordan Poyer to come back to Buffalo

The Bills needed safety help. That's where Poyer comes in.

Poyer is starting the season on the practice squad, but if he looks anything like himself he could earn a call-up to the active roster sooner rather than later.

Cole Bishop is slated to be the starting strong safety, with Taylor Rapp alongside him. Damar Hamlin and Jordan Hancock are lined up as backups.

Poyer's peak was better than any of that quartet. Now it's unlikely Poyer is still at his peak, but he can surely still get the job done.

And the Bills just needed a veteran voice and presence in one of their weakest position groups.

Jordan Poyer's Bills stats

Jordan Poyer spent seven years with the Buffalo Bills, from 2017 through 2023.

In that time, he suited up for 107 games, all starts.

Poyer recorded 22 interceptions with the Bills, at least two in every season except 2023.

He also made 682 tackles, including 35 for loss. He had 11 sacks, eight forced fumbles, six recovered fumbles and 48 passes defensed.

Poyer had played with the Eagles and Browns before Buffalo.

In 2024, he departed for the Dolphins, and he played in 16 games and had 98 tackles.

Now, Poyer is back to his NFL home base in Buffalo.
