The Buffalo Bills shocked the NFL world on Monday morning by firing head coach Sean McDermott.
The move just added to what's already been an insane coaching cycle. McDermott joins John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin as just some of the notable names who have been fired since the regular season concluded.
McDermott racked up a 105-57 overall record with the Bills, but a lack of postseason success ultimately did the coach in. The Bills lost to the Denver Broncos over the weekend, ending their season prematurely once again.
However, moving on from McDermott certainly isn't a decision every player was in favor of. An anonymous player reportedly responded to the news with "WTF," while defender Jordan Phillips offered an even stronger reaction.
Phillips took to Instagram to voice his displeasure with the move. The defender said “This s**t here is so stupid honestly sickening. The best coach I’ve ever been around."
It's a pretty big compliment for Phillips to say McDermott is the best coach he's been around. Phillips has been in the league since 2015 and has played for four different teams. If Phillips feels this way, it's likely other players do too.
Phillips played in 11 games in 2025 and nine tackles and one sack.
Notably, Phillips is not under contract in 2026, and it certainly seems unlikely he'll be brought back to Buffalo after this.
As for McDermott, the coach will likely have plenty of options. McDermott could be a candidate for one of several head coaching jobs that are still open, or perhaps a coordinator spot. The coach could also choose to sit out in 2026 and see what gigs are open next year.
It will be interesting to see where the Bills go from here. Brian Daboll, who was previously the Bills offensive coordinator, is available, and current offensive coordinator Joe Brady will likely receive an interview as well.
The main priority will be someone who can work with Allen and get the team over the hump and win a Super Bowl. McDermott was an elite regular season head coach, but the postseason disappointments became too much for the team to deal with.
