Falcons' Kaleb McGary injury remains a mystery as Atlanta seeks second opinion image

The Atlanta Falcons were on track to reach the regular season without any major injuries to key offensive players — until Wednesday, when right tackle Kaleb McGary was carted off the practice field. This injury is especially significant, as McGary protects the blindside of rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and the team already lacks depth at the tackle position.

“Atlanta is currently without swing tackle Storm Norton, who has been dealing with an injury of his own over the past few weeks. Without McGary or Norton, the tackle position opposite Jake Matthews is in a grim state. The current options to step in for McGary would be veteran Brandon Parker or rookie Jack Nelson. Both have been inconsistent at best throughout the preseason and training camp,” The Falcoholic’s Kevin Knight wrote.

Following McGary’s injury, concern over the team’s offensive line depth began to grow — not ideal with the regular season fast approaching.

“Discussed after Friday's second preseason game that offensive tackle depth is worrisome/shaky at the moment. So, this injury — depending on the severity — is very concerning,” Falcons reporter Tori McElhaney wrote.

On Thursday, McGary’s injury was officially reported, though no clear timeline for his return has been given.

“Atlanta Falcons right tackle Kaleb McGary will miss time due to a leg injury he sustained Wednesday during practice, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler,” ESPN’s Marci Raimondi wrote.

While the initial outlook isn’t encouraging, McGary may be seeking a second opinion for further clarity.

“The Falcons appear to be opting for a patient route with Kaleb McGary. I'd expect they're going for a second opinion, but they felt compelled to release something (even if it's incredibly vague). Everything could still be on the table, from a scare to out for the season... TBD,” SI’s Garrett Chapman wrote.

McGary is a vital part of the Falcons’ offensive line. If he’s out for an extended period, Atlanta will likely need to make a roster move to address the gap. As it stands, the team could enter the season without one of its most important players. The hope is that the second opinion brings clarity on a return timeline — or, in the best-case scenario, a much less serious outcome than initially feared.
