The Arizona Cardinals are navigating yet another week without the services of running back Trey Benson.
Benson was designated to return from injured reserve a few weeks back. He was able to turn in some limited practices after that, but he has now missed five practices in a row, which has led to fears about a setback.
While Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon wouldn't say Benson suffered a setback, he also wouldn't commit to Benson returning this season, either.
"RB Trey Benson won’t be activated yet. Gannon acknowledged he doesn’t know if Benson will return this season," Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com reported.
On Sunday, there was more doubt cast on Benson's ability to return in 2025. Here's the latest.
Is Trey Benson out for the season?
Benson's rest-of-season status has not been confirmed yet, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that there is a "real chance" Benson won't be back in 2025.
"Cardinals RB Trey Benson — who has not played since Week 4 due to a meniscus injury — must be activated this week or his season is over," Schefter said. "And with his practice window soon closing, there now is a real chance he will not be activated this week, per sources, and he will not be eligible to play again this season."
As Schefter notes, the Cardinals had 21 days to activate Benson off injured reserve from the date he was designated to return. If that doesn't happen, he must miss the rest of the season.
That decision must come down this week, but given the fact that Benson has gone backwards in his recovery these past few weeks, we would say he's unlikely to be activated and return this season.
