The Arizona Cardinals won't have running back Trey Benson in the lineup once again in Week 14, and he may not return at all this season.
Benson, who was pushed into a starting role in the wake of the season-ending injury to James Conner, has been on injured reserve since Week 5 with a knee injury.
He was designated to return from the list last week, but after turning in a limited practice in Week 13, he has been absent for the last five sessions, which led to concerns about a setback.
On Friday, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon revealed that Benson would not be cleared to play in Week 14 and admitted he wasn't sure if Benson would be back for the rest of the season.
"RB Trey Benson won’t be activated yet. Gannon acknowledged he doesn’t know if Benson will return this season," Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com relayed.
Unfortunately, this is not entirely shocking considering Benson's halted progress since last week. The writing was immediately on the wall that something was wrong after he saw a downgrade in participation.
Benson sitting out the rest of the year would be a tough blow, as the second-year back finally had an opportunity to show he could be a starter in the wake of Conner's injury.
Now, doubts about him will linger into 2026, assuming he indeed doesn't make it back..
With Benson remaining sidelined, the Cardinals will have to continue to rely on Bam Knight as their starter, with Emari Demercado and Michael Carter both chipping in.
