Texas reaches the edge and Jerry Palm breaks it down image

TL;DR

  • Texas Longhorns have a slim playoff possibility, requiring ten wins and significant help.
  • Arch Manning showed flashes but faced unreasonable expectations; improvement is expected next season.
  • A blowout loss Friday likely won't put Steve Sarkisian on the hot seat due to tough schedule.

Texas finds itself once again in that uncertain territory where optimism meets statistical probability. The Longhorns retain a possibility, however slim, and when the postseason outlook becomes unclear, Jerry Palm is the authority to consult. His recently launched website, PalmBrackets.com, along with his increasingly popular podcast, have become indispensable resources for supporters seeking an accurate assessment of the committee's inclinations.

Palm discussed the program's circumstances, the stress, and the inquiries with AllSportsPeople.

SN: If Texas wins and gets a lot of help, could they backdoor their way into the playoff?

Jerry: A minimum of ten wins is required for an at-large bid. That outcome seems unlikely. Even if the Aggies were to be defeated, they'd remain among the top six teams in the rankings.

SN: What’s your assessment of Arch Manning so far?

Jerry: While he showed flashes, the expectations were simply too high. Expecting him to immediately dominate at a program like Texas is unreasonable. The Longhorns seemed to anticipate Peyton Manning's arrival, but it's Arch, not Peyton.

He defended himself by saying he performed poorly against Ohio State, but that's a common outcome when facing them; they have a way of making opponents struggle. He also had some notable positive plays, and if he returns next season, that's when significant improvement is expected. By then, he'll have a complete grasp of the playbook and will be more at ease with the demanding schedule. I'm confident Arch will do well.

SN: Is there any scenario where a blowout loss on Friday puts Steve Sarkisian on the hot seat?

Jerry: Last year, they were among the leading teams in the playoffs, and I wouldn't be surprised if they make it back next year. Remember, it's challenging. Seven other highly-ranked teams from their conference compete with them for much of the season, and their schedule was incredibly tough.

To me, the Florida defeat is their sole poor showing, yet on October fourth, no one foresaw the Gators accumulating eight losses. Even if they lose on Friday, three of their four defeats would be against top-ranked Ohio State, third-ranked A&M, and fourth-ranked Georgia. Would you contemplate dismissing your coach due to a loss against Florida?
