Texas quarterback Arch Manning suffered a concussion during the Longhorns’ 45-38 overtime win against Mississippi State on Saturday, according to ESPN.
Manning exited after being hit on a 13-yard scramble in the overtime period. He dove for extra yardage before absorbing the blow and was taken to the medical tent shortly after.
The injury put a strain on what was arguably Manning’s best performance in a Texas uniform. He led a 17-point fourth-quarter comeback, finishing the night with 346 passing yards, three touchdowns, one interception, and a rushing score. Manning completed 12 of 20 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter alone.
With Manning sidelined in overtime, backup quarterback Matthew Caldwell stepped in and threw the game-winning touchdown to Emmett Mosley V to complete the Longhorns’ victory.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian did not provide an immediate update postgame. He did, however, say he would find out more once the team returned to Austin when asked about Manning’s condition. One of the main questions Sark wasn't side-stepping was about the NFL rumor reported by The Athletic's Diana Russini.
“It really pisses me off that one person can make a report that in turn, the entire media sports world runs with as factual to the point where my agency and my agents have to put a statement out,” Sarkisian said. “I had to do that to protect my locker room and my team. I thought it was absolutely ridiculous. I thought it was completely unprofessional of that person to put that report out, and the fact that everybody ran with it is borderline embarrassing for the media.”
As for Manning, the former five-star recruit has played a key role in Texas’ 2025 campaign despite the offense's overall inconsistency. Through eight games, Manning has completed 143 of 235 passes (60.9%) for 1,795 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has also rushed for 199 yards and six scores on 68 attempts.
Manning's availability for next week’s home matchup against Vanderbilt remains uncertain.
