Texas is set to lose a former ESPN 300 recruit, as redshirt freshman wide receiver Aaron Butler is expected to enter the transfer portal, according to a report by On3.
A four-star prospect from Calabasas, California, Butler appeared in four games over two seasons but logged just one career reception, which was0 a 17-yard catch against Sam Houston in 2025.
Butler arrived in Austin as one of the nation’s top athletes, ranked No. 212 overall in the Rivals Industry Ranking and among the top 20 players in California. He chose the Longhorns over interest from Arizona and Washington, the latter Texas’ opponent in the 2023 College Football Playoff semifinal.
His departure adds another roster question for Texas after a 9-3 season that fell short of both a Big 12 title appearance and a CFP berth for the first time since 2022.
With the portal opening Jan. 2, the Longhorns are expected to be active as they prepare for what could be quarterback Arch Manning’s final season and look to replace several key defensive contributors. Butler will have three years of eligibility at his next stop.
