Texas A&M makes another key extension decision after locking down Mike Elko image

TL;DR

  • Texas A&M extended athletic director Trev Alberts to a six-year, $11 million deal through 2031.
  • Alberts' contract makes him one of the top five highest-paid ADs in college football.
  • He arrived in 2024 and has overseen two national championships and four SEC championships for the Aggies.
  • The move aims to build a strong foundation for Texas A&M in the NIL era.

Only days after the Texas A&M Aggies extended head coach Mike Elko, they doubled down and extended athletic director Trev Alberts. In a unifying move, the University made an investment in the future by retaining the current regime.

Alberts new contract is a six-year deal worth more than $11 million average over the term of the deal. The deal makes Alberts one of the five highest paid athletic directors in college football and will keep him in College Station through 2031.

Alberts became part of the Aggies in 2024, following his tenure as athletic director for Nebraska, the institution where he played football. As reported by ESPN, Alberts finalized a 15-year, $515 million fully guaranteed contract for multimedia rights earlier this year. This agreement also incorporated an NIL strategy for Aggies athletes.

Alberts, since arriving at Texas A&M in 2021, has been in charge of two national championships for women's tennis and men's outdoor track & field, with the latter claiming its fifth outdoor title in 2025. The Aggies have also secured four SEC championships during Alberts' tenure, including women's tennis victories in 2024 and 2025, men's indoor track & field's 2025 title, and softball's 2025 SEC Tournament championship.

Elko and Alberts are developing a project in College Station.

"As we navigate the changing college athletics landscape, Trev Alberts' professionalism, knowledge and business-minded approach is just what we need to compete boldly in the future," said Tommy Williams, Texas A&M's interim president.

Texas A&M is establishing a strong foundation in this new NIL era, and maintaining a cohesive leadership team is a shrewd decision for The Aggies. They possess advantages in location, scale, alumni network, and crucially, financial resources to remain competitive and attract premier recruits within the current NIL landscape. The Aggies' strategic move to secure both their head coach and athletic director within a short timeframe demonstrates a commitment to unified progress toward their shared objectives.

"We're building something special here at Texas A&M, and my partnership with Trev is an integral part of that," Elko said. "I've truly appreciated his leadership, especially the open dialogue he maintains with his coaches to gather feedback and elevate Texas A&M as one of the nation's premier brands."

Texas A&M continues their undefeated 2025 campaign this week against the 1-10 Samford Bulldogs. That game kicks off at Noon pm ET and will broadcast on the SEC Network. As long as the Aggies win this week, they could end their undefeated season against No. 17 Texas the following week.
