Texas A&M is finalizing a six-year contract extension with coach Mike Elko that will put him among the highest-paid coaches in college football, according to reports on Saturday.

The agreement is expected to average more than $11 million annually and comes as the No. 3 Aggies push toward a potentially historic finish.

Elko has the Aggies off to a 9-0 start heading into Saturday’s matchup with South Carolina. A win would give the Aggies their first 10-win season since 2012 and only their second since 2000.

Texas A&M hasn’t opened a season 10-0 since 1992, a feat achieved just three times in program history.

Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger first reported the extension and details of the deal. Elko’s new contract would vault him into the top tier of coaching salaries alongside Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Ohio State’s Ryan Day, USC’s Lincoln Riley and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, according to USA TODAY Sports.

Elko’s current $7 million salary ranks just 12th in the SEC, but his on-field results have rapidly rewritten expectations. He is 17-5 in College Station after posting a 16-9 record in two seasons at Duke, where he earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2022. He previously served as Jimbo Fisher’s defensive coordinator at Texas A&M from 2018 to 2021.

Elko was linked to the opening at Penn State, but the extension is expected to eliminate any pursuit in the wide-open coaching carousel.
