The Southeastern Conference unveiled its top performers from Week Two, spotlighting game changing efforts across all three phases.
Offensive honors went to Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, who helped the Sooners earn a 24 to 13 victory over No. 15 Michigan. Mateer completed 21 of 34 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a team high 74 yards and two scores. He accounted for all three Oklahoma touchdowns, including a 10 yard keeper in the third quarter. Mateer then orchestrated a late 16 play drive that drained more than eight minutes and sealed the win. Through two games, he has completed 72 percent of his passes for 662 yards, the second most by any Oklahoma quarterback in the first two games of a career.
On defense, Vanderbilt linebacker Nick Rinaldi and Mississippi State linebacker Nic Mitchell shared the spotlight. Rinaldi logged six tackles and a career best two and a half tackles for loss in a road win at Virginia Tech, anchoring a defense that allowed just 21 second half yards. Mitchell delivered nine tackles in the Bulldogs’ upset of No. 10 Arizona State, highlighted by a goal line stop in the final two minutes to preserve the victory.
