Q1 15:00- Start of game. Ole Miss will receive the ball first
The Magnolia Bowl between No. 4 LSU and No. 13 Ole Miss looks far different than expected, thanks to a surprise quarterback twist for the Rebels.
With starter Austin Simmons sidelined by injury, Division II transfer Trinidad Chambliss has seized the moment. The Ferris State product, who won a national title before transferring, has impressed in two starts, passing for more than 300 yards while adding a dangerous running threat in wins over Arkansas and Tulane.
“He’s been really effective throwing and running,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said.
The Tigers’ defense, however, boasts a weapon unlike any other. Linebacker Harold Perkins Jr., who tormented Ole Miss as a freshman with a game-changing sack and multiple hurries, is back in his disruptive role after LSU scrapped last season’s attempt to make him a traditional inside linebacker.
“They’re back full circle,” Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said. “He did great against us before, and now he’s playing that same role again.”
The Rebels (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) are chasing a breakthrough win that could propel them into the College Football Playoff conversation. The Tigers (4-0, 1-0) have already shown they can win on the road, defeating Clemson in Week 1, though that victory has lost some luster with the Tigers’ recent struggles.
Offensively, LSU relies on senior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, but the Tigers may lean on their ground game against a Rebel defense allowing 190.5 rushing yards per game. That plan depends on the health of star running back Caden Durham, who sprained his ankle last week.
The Rebels bring intrigue beyond Chambliss. Former LSU defensive back Sage Ryan is set to face his old team, and Kiffin even downplayed his daughter’s relationship with LSU linebacker Whit Weeks, calling it “nothing to do with the game.”
Last season, Ole Miss gashed LSU for 706 yards in a 55-49 victory in Oxford. This time, the Tigers arrive with what Kiffin calls their most talented defense since his staff joined the SEC in 2020.
A road win for LSU would strengthen its national title credentials. A Rebel upset could reshape the playoff race.
