Ohio State set to make major change to football uniforms ahead of upcoming season image

Ohio State is preparing for a significant shift to one of the most recognizable looks in college football.

According to a report from Eleven Warriors, sponsored jersey patches could soon be added to the Ohio State Buckeyes uniform rotation. It's a move made possible by the continued evolution of name, image and likeness revenue in college athletics. While no specific sponsor has been finalized, the report notes that discussions are already underway.

Learfield, who is a major multimedia rights holder in college sports, confirmed it is pursuing a jersey patch partnership with Ohio State as part of a broader expansion of sponsorship opportunities. This would be part of the first wave in college football and with an iconic brand.

“As one of the most celebrated schools in college athletics, boasting 36 sports, a jersey patch opportunity with Ohio State would represent one of the most highly coveted sponsor partnerships in college sports,” Learfield said in a news release.

Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said the timing reflects a rapidly changing landscape.

“It’s a critical juncture in college athletics,” Bjork said, adding that the partnership would help maximize revenue and expand NIL strategies across the department.

The possibility of advertisements on Ohio State’s traditional scarlet and gray uniforms has sparked strong reactions among fans, many of whom oppose altering one of college football’s most iconic designs.

However, as NIL-driven commercialization accelerates in college football, Ohio State could be among the first major programs to take that step. Also, they surely don't want to be last at the table when negotiating either.

Ohio State opens the 2026 football season against Ball State on Sept. 5 before heading to Austin to face Arch Manning and Texas in Week 2.
