Notre Dame had a quarterback competition before this season.
CJ Carr won the QB job for the Fighting Irish.
The man left out, Kenny Minchey, is on his way out in the transfer portal.
He's a former four-star recruit who will be well sought after. And the fit may be Virginia.
The Cavaliers are the predicted landing sport of The Athletic's Manny Navarro.
"Minchey, who was beaten out for the starting job at Notre Dame by CJ Carr, is highly coveted by a few schools," Navarro wrote this week. "I like him or Jake Merklinger, a Tennessee transfer, as a replacement for Chandler Morris. Morris led the Cavaliers to the ACC Championship Game in 2025 but would need a medical waiver from the NCAA to play in 2026."

Minchey came to Notre Dame from Hendersonville, Tennessee in the 2023 recruiting class. He chose the Fighting Irish over the likes of Pitt, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Michigan State.
He was the No. 14 QB in his class according to Rivals.
Minchey threw for more than 5,000 yards in his high school career at Pope Saint John Paul II Prep.
His original college commitment was to the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Interestingly, he is 14-for-15 passing (93.3%) in his limited playing time, for 146 yards.
He also has a rushing touchdown on five total carries for 31 yards.
At Virginia, Morris was a great QB after his transfer, but assuming his college career is done, Minchey would be a solid replacement.
