Bill Belichick goes viral for awkward handshake after Wake Forest loss image

North Carolina Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick seemed to be uninterested in having an exchange with Wake Forest’s Jake Dickert on Saturday night.

Moments after the UNC's 28-12 loss at Truist Field, Belichick went directly toward Dickert with an awkward half-shake before heading to the tunnel.

Dickert removed his hat in a show of respect, but Belichick barely acknowledged it. The meeting lasted barely a second before Belichick continued off the field, visibly frustrated after UNC dropped to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in ACC play.

When asked what he said to Dickert, Belichick responded by saying, “Congratulations.”

There was little else to offer after a performance that saw the Tar Heels fail to score a touchdown. North Carolina settled for four field goals, converted just 4-of-14 third downs and managed only 56 rushing yards. Wake Forest outgained the Tar Heels by 157 yards and struck early when a fumble recovery turned into a 50-yard touchdown on the opening drive.

This was a blow for Belichick's bowl game chances in Year 1. The loss also comes one day after he brushed aside speculation linking him to the New York Giants’ vacancy.

UNC must win its final two games to reach bowl eligibility, beginning Nov. 22 at home against Duke. They face a tough finale at NC State, who previously beat ACC title favorites Virginia and Georgia Tech.
