Is Texas out of the playoff? Breaking down the Longhorns' CFP chances after loss to Florida image

Texas entered the 2025 season as the No. 1 team in America and was considered a national championship contender. But through two weeks, the Longhorns are on the outside looking in for the College Football Playoff.

The No. 9 Longhorns lost their second game of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling 29-21 to the 1-3 Florida Gators. Texas drops to 3-2, with the other loss coming against No. 3 Ohio State in Week 1.

Being in the SEC with two losses already, the Longhorns’ odds of making the 12-team playoff continue to shrink. Let’s break down their chances moving forward.

Is Texas out of the College Football Playoff?

The Longhorns entered Saturday’s matchup against Florida ranked No. 9, but after losing to a Florida team that had dropped three straight games heading into the contest, they will likely be on the outside looking in when the new rankings are released.

Texas had won three straight against San Jose State, UTEP, and Sam Houston, but they are still searching for a victory over a Power-4 opponent. They opened the season with a loss to Ohio State, currently ranked No. 1, but falling to an unranked team is a major blow to their postseason hopes.

The Longhorns compete in a loaded SEC with four more games against ranked opponents, meaning they may need to run the table to reach the SEC Championship or the College Football Playoff.

Texas upcoming schedule

After the loss to Florida, the road does not get easier for Texas. Next week, they face No. 5 Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

The Longhorns also face No. 12 Georgia in Athens, a place the Bulldogs have only lost once since 2019, and No. 6 Texas A&M in the season finale.
