The Baylor Bears delivered an upset on Saturday, taking down No. 17 SMU on the road, 48-45, in double overtime. While neither defense had a particularly solid day, one player stood out: Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson.
Robertson finished the day 34-of-50 passing for 440 yards with four touchdowns. He averaged 8.8 yards per throw, marking the second-best game of his career.
SMU's defense had no answer for the quarterback, and with the win, Baylor now has 14 straight victories over the Mustangs. It was a huge win for Baylor and an even bigger one for Robertson.
Let's learn a little more about Robertson and his impressive day.
Who is Sawyer Robertson?
Sawyer Robertson is a second-year starter for Baylor. He was a former 4-star quarterback from the class of 2021, out of Lubbock, Texas. He was ranked the No. 16 quarterback prospect in his class, and ranked 21st in the state of Texas per 247Sports. He signed with Mississippi State, and spent just one season in Starkville.
He transferred to Baylor after completing just five passes for the
He played for the Bulldogs as a true freshman. In 2023, he started the season as a backup to Baylor's starting quarterback, Blake Shapen. He did see the field late in the season when Shapen went down with an injury, finishing with 864 passing yards and two touchdowns, along with 69 rushing yards in six games.
Last season, he was Baylor's starting quarterback for the entire season. He had a solid year, completing 62.9 percent of his passes for 3,071 yards with 28 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. He also added four rushing touchdowns.
Against SMU, he showed off his touch and accuracy with some excellent throws. His fourth touchdown pass, which tied the game at 38 late in the fourth quarter, was a perfect throw.
Sawyer Robertson had already put on a show today, then dismantled SMU on the last drive that finished with this TD to Kobe Prentice.

His offensive line held up great against the SMU front, too, which gave Robertson plenty of time to throw:

Robertson seems to be picking up right where he left off last season at Baylor. During the Bears' bowl game against LSU in the Texas Bowl, he threw for a career-best 445 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Is Sawyer Robertson an NFL prospect?
At the start of this season, Robertson likely entered as a late-round or undrafted free agent prospect. He has just one year of experience as a starter, and his lone season of starting stats wasn’t particularly overwhelming.
But if Robertson continues to put up numbers like he did against SMU, his stock could rise quickly.
