ESPN's "College GameDay" typically broadcasts live from the college campus hosting the week’s biggest game. In Week 2, it’s fitting that the crew will be in Norman, Okla., on Saturday morning ahead of the Sooners’ home matchup against No. 15 Michigan.

Alongside the analyst panel—Rece Davis, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, Nick Saban, and Kirk Herbstreit—the show will feature a guest picker. Usually appearing during the final 30 minutes of the program, this week’s guest will be NBA star Trae Young.

Here’s what you need to know about Young and why he was chosen as the celebrity guest picker for Michigan vs. Oklahoma.

Where is Trae Young from?

Tabbing Young as this week's guest picker is really a no-brainer. That's because the NBA star played high school basketball in Norman, Okla. He played college basketball for the Sooners, too.

The Atlanta Hawks point guard was born in Lubbock, Texas, and grew up primarily in Pampa, Texas, about three and a half hours west of Norman.

At Norman North High School, Young had a standout career as a point guard. According to MaxPreps, he went 69-13 over three seasons and scored 2,445 points. He also led the Timberwolves to the Class 6A state finals in both his junior and senior seasons.

In 2017, Young was named a McDonald’s All-American, averaging nearly 43 points per game, and earned the Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year award.

247Sports rated Young as a five-star prospect coming out of high school. He was ranked as the No. 3 overall point guard from the class of 2017, and the top-rated prospect in Oklahoma. He was No. 24 overall nationally.

Young signed with the hometown Oklahoma Sooners to play college basketball .

Trae Young Oklahoma career

Young played one season for the Sooners in 2017-18, helping Oklahoma finish 18-14. He guided the team to the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to No. 7 seed Rhode Island 83-78 in overtime in the first round.

The Norman, Okla. product has given back to the city during his NBA career. In 2024, the Trae Young Family Athletic Center opened in Norman. The 122,000 square foot facility was built on a 12-acre site on the north side of Norman, OK. Made possible by a $4 million donation from the Trae Young Family Foundation, the facility features basketball and volleyball courts, swimming pools, a sports medicine section as well as retail stores.

Earlier this year, Young pledged $1 million to go towards the Sooners' men's basketball program. He is also an assistant general manager for the OU men's basketball team.

Young will surely be fired up to be Saturday's guest picker in front of his home crowd.
