It was nearly a very merry Christmas for Texas A&M student Austin Roberts, who spoke to us briefly before the kickoff at Kyle Field. The kick wasn’t successful, but his effort was certainly apparent. Today’s kicking segment felt different, with over 100,000 fans inside Kyle Field and millions watching at home, indeed high stakes.

Pat McAfee $1,000,000 kicking challenge was almost a success

Roberts told us he had been practicing in his overalls and on a baseball field. He was joined by his fellow fraternity brothers and many other A&M fans who joined him in prayer before the kick. He mentioned he planned to donate $900k of the $1,000,000 to his fraternity’s philanthropy.

Pat McAfee has been a staple since joining the College GameDay crew in 2022, and his kicking segment has become famous. Fans are selected, and chosen fans from the crowd attempt a 33-yard field goal for large cash prizes, often raising money for charity; past winners have earned hundreds of thousands of dollars, and some have hit perfect kicks, creating viral moments of extreme pressure and success.
