Washington head coach Jedd Fisch didn’t need to exaggerate what he saw Friday night, the numbers spoke for themselves. Sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr. set the school’s all-time total offense record with 538 yards, leading the Huskies to a 38-19 comeback win over Rutgers.
“Proud of our guys,” Fisch said. “Thought it was a really good battle early. Rutgers came out as they always do, explosive. They played very well as I would expect. Coach Schiano, I have so much respect for him. His team is always going to be extremely prepared.”
Down 10-0 in the first quarter, Fisch said his team never panicked. “We needed that next drive, that fourth drive, to get that touchdown, and then I think we got going a little bit.”

Williams did the rest, completing 21 of 27 passes for 402 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 136 yards and two more scores. “He is special,” Fisch said. “The fact that he had the all-time total offense record… the first person at Washington to have over 400 passing and 100 rushing, he is special, and we’ve known that for a lot of years now.”
Even in praise, Fisch offered perspective. “The biggest thing we have to work on with Demond is not getting tackled so much. He has to protect himself…run for 40 yards and then slide.”
The Huskies move to 5-1, with a defining trip to Michigan next Saturday.
