Virginia Tech’s coaching search has one name at the top. But the Hokies are reportedly playing the waiting game.

Former Penn State coach James Franklin has emerged as the clear top target to replace Brent Pry, who was dismissed earlier this season.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Virginia Tech and Franklin have held "early talks" in recent days, but the process hit a new stage. On3's Pete Nakos reported Sunday that the Hokies “need a final decision from Franklin soon.”

"Franklin is a candidate in other searches, but the Hokies have wanted to make a hire by the end of the regular season, and they need a final decision from Franklin soon," Nakos wrote.

"If Franklin continues to make Virginia Tech wait and a deal does not get done, James Madison’s Bob Chesney and Tulane’s Jon Sumrall are the top names to know."

Franklin was fired by Penn State on Oct. 12 after a 3-3 start. He remains one of the most recognizable coaches on the market. His resume includes a College Football Playoff appearance last year and a 128-60 overall record and nearly a dozen bowl berths. That profile has kept him in the mix for several openings, including in the SEC with LSU, Arkansas and Auburn.

For Virginia Tech, Franklin would bring instant credibility and a proven track record of recruiting and program-building. He has said he want to win a national championship at his next stop. Will that be in Blacksburg?
