The last time the Vanderbilt Commodores football program had a season like this, the SEC was still 17 years away from its founding.

You have to go back to 1915 to find a Vandy campaign like this.

On Saturday, Vanderbilt won its ninth game of the regular season. The Commodores haven't had nine wins in a regular season since 1915.

Let's take a quick look back at that 1915 Vanderbilt team.

It was coached by Dan McGugin and played an independent schedule.

Those Commodores led the entire country in scoring, averaging 51.3 points per game as they went 9-1.

They averaged 51 points and they, in total, gave up 38 points for the season.

The nine wins for 1915 Vandy were:

  • Vandy 51, Middle Tennessee State 0
  • Vandy 47, Rhodes 0
  • Vandy 75, Georgetown (Ky) 0
  • Vandy 60, Cumberland 0
  • Vandy 100, Henderson State 0
  • Vandy 91, Ole Miss 0
  • Vandy 35, Tennessee 0
  • Vandy 17, Auburn 0
  • Vandy 27, Sewanee 3

Vanderbilt's only loss was at Virginia, 35-10.

Even this year's Commodores can't claim a 91-0 victory over Mississippi. Man, those Vandy lads knew how to run up some scores.

This year's squad will get a chance at 10 regular season wins when the 'Dores play at Tennessee on Saturday. A victory there would make more history, and it'd open the door for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
