Toledo is in the picture.

Yes, the College Football Playoff Picture.

And yes, seriously.

No, a down of football hasn't been played yet this season, but the Rockets enter the campaign with plenty of hype. They're the favorites to win the Mid-American Conference, and with that comes potential.

The CFP brings along the top-ranked Group of 5 team to the dance. Toledo has a chance to be that team.

While the Associated Press Top 25 doesn't decide the CFP rankings, the preseason poll sets a tone, for sure.

And in the AP Top 25 preseason rankings, Toledo came in 11th in the receiving votes category, making the Rockets the de facto No. 36 team in the nation.

In the poll, Boise State, Tulane and UNLV are ranked ahead of Toledo. The Broncos come in at No. 25, with the others also in the receiving votes category.

Last season, the Rockets finished the regular season 7-5, 4-4 in the MAC. They won their bowl game against Pitt in six overtimes, 48-46.

Head coach Jason Candle has the Rockets sending talented players to the NFL, like Eagles' Super Bowl champion Quinyon Mitchell. And he has lots of talent back this season, including quarterback Tucker Gleason.

Their running back likely starter is a familiar name: Chip Trayanum, formerly of Ohio State.

For Toledo to make the CFP, it'd have to go 12-0. That quest will start right off the bat when the Rockets open at SEC foe Kentucky.

They then take on Western Kentucky and Morgan State. Later in the year, they wrap up the non-league state with a long trip to play at Washington State.

Is Toledo the favorite to go dancing from the smaller conferences? Maybe not. But there's a real chance.
