JUMP TO:
Ohio State’s defense was the nation’s best at limiting opponents in 2024, allowing the fewest points in the country while powering the Buckeyes to their ninth national championship. But there were question marks entering 2025 after losing some key players and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.
However, the Buckeyes’ defense — with new coordinator Matt Patricia at the helm — issued a statement against the preseason No. 1 team in Texas, stifling the Longhorns all day. By the time the clock hit all zeroes, the defending champions won the matchup between two top-3 teams, 14-7.
For the Longhorns, quarterback Arch Manning made his first start as the full-time starter and struggled throughout the game, completing 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Ohio State’s defense dominated, forcing a turnover and holding Texas to just seven points, which came in the final minutes.
On the other side, Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin had a solid debut in his first collegiate start, throwing for 126 yards and a touchdown, including a 40-yard score to Carnell Tate. Texas’ defense, ranked No. 3 nationally in 2024, played like one of the nation’s best but spent too much time on the field to make a difference.
While Manning’s struggles are likely to grab headlines, the bigger story may be Ohio State’s defense and its new coordinator, who kept the Heisman-favorite quarterback and his offense scoreless for 55 minutes. The Buckeyes made the key plays when it mattered most and protected their home stadium.

Final: Ohio State 14, Texas 7
3:25 p.m.: Sayin kneels three times as the clock hits zeroes, and No. 3 Ohio State defeats No. 1 Texas in what was one of the most highly anticipated Week 1 matchups in a long time.
3:24 p.m.: One last time, the Buckeyes defense ices the game.
Manning is able to get a throw off with C.J. Hicks all over him, hitting Endries in front of the line of scrimmage. But, it's safety Caleb Downs — widely considered one of the best defensive players in America — who tackles Endries before the line to game.
3:19 p.m.: After missing Wingo for a big play on fist down, Manning hits Jack Endries for a 30-yard completion before the clock hits two minutes. He lofted one over two Ohio State defensive backs to hit Endries on the left sideline.

Texas is on its 45 yard line at the two-minute timeout, still trailing by 7.
3:16 p.m.: With a chance to ice the game, Ohio State goes three-and-out and will punt back to Texas before the two-minute timeout. Sayin hits Inniss on a drag route, but he is tripped up before the line to gain. It looked like Smith was open in the middle of the field too, but Sayin opted to go underneath.
Manning and Texas have a chance to tie up the game with just over two minutes remaining.
Ohio State 14, Texas 7
3:08 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: The Longhorns are on the board on Manning's best throw of the day.
The quarterback buys some time and hits Livingstone in the back right of the end zone — the same place he dropped the ball the drive before — for a 32-yard touchdown, and Texas makes it a one-score game.

3:03 p.m.: Sayin and Ohio State ran five plays after the critical fourth down stop, but the Longhorns defense is able to stop them once again. Texas calls timeout and will get the ball back with around four minutes remaining.
2:55 p.m.: After the overruled interception by Styles, Texas marched inside the 10-yard line. But once, again the Buckeyes defense makes a stand deep in their own territory.
On 4th & 3, Manning tries finding Parker Livingstone in the back right corner of the endzone, and he hits him in his hands. But, Livingstone is unable to bring it in.

The Ohio State defense keeps Texas scoreless.
2:49 p.m.: Texas had a promising drive after going down two scores, but then Manning tries forcing one into traffic. Sonny Styles lays out after a deflection, and it was ruled an interception. But, after review, the ball hit the ground.
Styles, the 6' 5" linebacker, is wearing the Buckeyes' coveted No. 0 jersey, which was held by leading tackler Cody Simon in 2024. Styles had 100 tackles of his own, which was second on the Buckeyes defense. He's been all over the place today.
Ohio State 14, Texas 0
2:37 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: Sayin throws his deepest pass of the game, and 40-yard shot to Tate, who reels it in in the end zone after the bobble and Ohio State takes a 14-0 lead.

Tate had 52 receptions for 733 yards and four touchdowns in 2024, and with the loss of Emeka Egbuka, was expected to have a bigger role. He makes the best offensive play of the game so far up to this point, and the Buckeyes go up two possessions.
End of the third quarter: Ohio State 7, Texas 0
2:30 p.m.: Ohio State picks up its first first down of the second half, with Sayin hitting Smith on a drag route over the middle for seven yards.
The next play, Sayin hits Donaldson Jr. out of the backfield to move the Buckeyes past midfield. The clock hits zeroes, and we have one quarter to go in Columbus.
Texas has been shut out through three quarters for the first time since 2015, and the No. 1 team in America is trailing going into the fouth.
2:24 p.m.: Manning's tough day continues, and this time, he throws his first interception of the season.
The quarterback tried finding Ryan Wingo on a comeback, but the route was jumped by junior cornerback Jermaine Matthews Jr. Matthews Jr. is replacing Burke, who was the Buckeyes' No. 1 cornerback in 2024.

The Ohio State defense tallies the game's first turnover.
2:20 p.m.: With the Buckeye offense on the two-yard line, a holding penalty in the end zone looked like Texas would have its first points of the game on a safety. But, a personal foul call against the Longhorns scrapped the penalty.

The Texas offense had a promising first drive of the second half, and now will start its second near midfield.
2:12 p.m.: The Ohio State defense comes up huge again.
With Texas on the one-yard line, Manning attempts a sneak on 4th & goal. He is met by a swarm of Buckeyes, who make the goal line stand and keep the Longhorns scoreless.

2:06 p.m.: Texas has moved the ball mainly on rushing plays, but Manning completes consecutive passes to Deandre Moore Jr. and Daylan McCutcheon for a first down.
Texas is inside the Buckeye 10.
2:04 p.m.: On a 2nd & 13, Manning keeps his eyes down field, but eventually scrambles for the first down. The quarterback evaded pressure once again and used his legs to move the chains.

Manning handed it off to Wisner on the next two plays, and Texas is in Ohio State territory. Wisner has four carries on this drive.
2:00 p.m.: Texas kicks us off to begin the second half. The Ohio State offense takes the field, holding a 7-0 lead.
Sayin hit Smith on the first play of the drive, and two plays later, he tries to find Smith again on 3rd & 5. Malik Muhammad, who had eight passes defended in 2024, was physical with Smith and broke up the pass.
Manning and the Texas offense will take over for its first drive this half.
1:44 p.m.: Both quarterbacks have underwhelming stats in what has been a defensive battle up to this point, averaging under five yards per attempt. Manning is 5-for-10 for 26 yards, while Sayin is 6-for-11 for 53 yards.
Defensively, Ohio State and Texas were the No. 1 and No. 3 scoring defenses in America in 2024. Through one half, both units have stifled the prolific offenses they are facing, proving they can be one of the top defenses in the country once again.

Donaldson leads all backs with 10 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown. For Texas, Wisner — who is coming of a 1,000 yard season — only has four carries for 14 yards. He is not the Longhorns' top rusher; Baxter is leading the way with seven carries for 26 yards.
Halftime: Ohio State 7, Texas 0
1:34 p.m.: Manning and co. are able to move the ball past midfield, but opted to punt on a tough 4th & 3 situation. Texas was able to pin Ohio State inside the five-yard line, and Sayin kneels it.
The teams go to the locker room with the Buckeyes leading the Longhorns, 7-0.
1:25 p.m: Sayin hits Smith for their third connection of the game, but the Texas defense is right there to stop any additional yardage. Ohio State will be forced to punt again at the two-minute timeout.
Smith has three receptions for 27 yards in the first half.
1:23 p.m.: Pinned deep in their own territory, Sayin completes a tough pass on third down to Carnell Tate to keep the chains moving for the Buckeyes. Tate was had a defensive back right on him, but was able to reel it in.

1:17 p.m.: The Ohio State secondary, which lost key players in Denzel Burke and Lathan Ransom, has looked the part early on.
This time, it's a coverage sack and Arvel Reese gets to Manning on third down. Texas has to punt for the third straight drive.
1:15 p.m.: This is the most comfortable Manning has looked so far. On a 3rd & 3, he avoids pressure and scrambles for a first down. Texas moves the chains and is looking to respond.
Ohio State 7, Texas 0
1:07 p.m. TOUCHDOWN: Buckeyes running back C.J. Donaldson Jr. gets his third consecutive carry, this time on 4th & goal, and falls into the end zone to break the deadlock. The defending champions strike first and take a 7-0 lead.

Ohio State caps off a 13-play, 80 yard drive that spanned over eight minutes of game time.
12:57 p.m.: On 3rd down, Sayin lobs up a deep ball to Brandon Inniss on the left sideline, which goes through his hands. But, a Texas face mask penalty keeps the drive going, and Ohio State is inside the Texas 30.
12:55 p.m.: Ohio State opens up the second quarter with a James Peoples six-yard rush, giving the Buckeyes a first down.
For the first time today, Ohio State is in Texas territory.
End of first quarter: Texas 0, Ohio State 0
12:49 p.m.: Sayin hits Smith, who was sitting wide open on a curl in the middle of the field, for 16 yards, moving the chains for the Buckeyes. The sophomore was able to turn up field and gain some more yards for Ohio State.
12:46 p.m.: Manning finds himself under pressure on a 3rd & 8, and gets swarmed by the Ohio State pass rush as he steps up in the pocket. Texas punts again, the fifth consecutive punt to open up the game.
12:41 p.m.: Ohio State stalls out on its second drive. After Smith caught his first target, he had two more, but Sayin under threw both.
12:38 p.m.: Jeremiah Smith has his first target of the game, reeling in a screen pass from Saying and taking it six yards.
Smith is coming off a season where he tallied 76 receptions for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns. He scored a touchdown in three out of four CFP games; the one where he did not was against Texas, where he only had one reception for three yards.
12:33 p.m.: Manning and Texas are unable to do anything with good field position, and have to punt the ball back to Ohio State.
The Texas offensive line, who won the Joe Moore award for the nation's best line in 2024, has held up well so far. But, Texas receivers have been blanketed down the field.
12:28 p.m.: On a 4th & 1, Sayin's first pass attempt is dropped by Max Klare on the left sideline, giving Texas the ball back near midfield. The quarterback had time after a play action dropback, but Klare could not reel it in.
Both Steve Sarkisian and Ryan Day are not afraid to go for it early in this one.
12:22 p.m.: Now in opponent territory, Texas goes for it on fourth down for the second time on the first drive.
This time on 4th & 2, Baxter is stuffed by the Buckeye defense, and Texas turns the ball over on downs.
