Texas A&M defeats Utah State 44-22 but QB Marcel Reed injured: Score, live updates of non-conference game from Kyle Field image

Texas A&M had a successful season opener last week.

The Aggies now want to keep generating momentum in preparation for next week's huge game at Notre Dame. A&M, ranked No. 19, is back in action at Kyle Field Saturday morning to take on another set of Aggies - the Aggies of Utah State.

A&M (1-0) is coming off a 42-24 win against UTSA, as quarterback Marcel Reed threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns. But it was also a breakout game in the debut of new Aggie wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, both offseason transfers.

Concepcion caught a TD pass and had A&M's opening score by returning a punt 80 yards for a TD. Craver was the Aggies' top receiver with six catches for 122 yards and two TDs.

A&M's defense, after giving up a 75-yard TD run on the opening play of the second half which cut the Aggies' lead to 21-17, then put the clamps on the Roadrunners, forcing six straight punts. The final score by UTSA came in the closing seconds.

Utah State (1-0) also won its season-opener last week, 28-16, against UTEP in the first game under new coach Bronco Mendenhall. Quarterback Bryson Barnes threw for 233 yards and a TD, and running back Miles Davis had nearly 150 yards of total offense with a rushing TD.

POSTGAME

- A&M moves to 2-0 but the big question will be the health of Marcel Reed. But coach Mike Elko immediately answered that question by telling the SEC Network that Reed "is fine," essentially good to go for next week in South Bend.

FOURTH QUARTER

- A&M clinches the win by holding Utah State on fourth down as Sam M'Pemba gets a sack, a strip and a fumble with more than a minute left.  

- TOUCHDOWN UTAH STATE. USU finishes off a 67-yard drive with a 1-yard flip from Bryson Barnes to Miles Davis. Utah State adds two more points on a Barnes pass. (Texas A&M, 44-22 | 4:24, 4th) 

- A&M misses a 50-yard field goal with 7:45 remaining. 

- TOUCHDOWN TEXAS A&M. Miles O'Neill throws it deep, and Mario Craver is all alone to haul it in and finish off a 72-yard strike. A&M now up 30. (Texas A&M, 44-14, 13:36, 4th) 

- Reports are that Marcel Reed is available to play again but unlikely to return. A&M appears to be saving him for Notre Dame next week. 

THIRD QUARTER

- Marcel Reed is headed to the locker room as the third period ends. A&M forced a punt in the final seconds, and Miles O'Neill returned to the field. 

- Marcel Reed is in the injury tent right now, but Miles O'Neill just throws a pick. Not a good sequence for A&M. 

- Marcel Reed is able to get up and walk off on his own power. But Miles O'Neill is coming on at QB for A&M. 

- Uh oh, Marcel Reed is down on the field after taking a shot. It appears he may have landed on his hand. He's being checked on by the training staff. 

- TOUCHDOWN TEXAS A&M. A&M finishes off a 9-play 80-yard drive with an 8-yard pass from Marcel Reed to KC Concepcion. Reed up to 18-of-27 passing for 214 yards and three TDs. (Texas A&M, 37-14 | 6:07, 3rd) 

- A&M inside the Utah State 45 and goes for it on fourth down, but an incomplete pass turns it over on downs. 

- TOUCHDOWN UTAH STATE. USU goes 75 yards in seven plays to start the second half, ending with a 16-yard pass from Bryson Barnes to Braden Pegan. USU goes for two and gets it. (Texas A&M, 30-14 | 12:45, 4th)

HALFTIME

- Texas A&M with 311 yards of total offense, including 162 on the ground. Marcel Reed with 149 yards passing and 59 yards rushing and three total TDs. A&M's defense has held Utah State to 61 total yards. 

- Utah State just runs out the clock, and Texas A&M takes a 24-point lead into its locker room at the break.

SECOND QUARTER

- TOUCHDOWN TEXAS A&M. Marcel Reed masterful on that last drive, and caps it off with a 12-yard TD strike to KC Concepcion. A 77-yard drive in eight plays, and Reed is up to 147 yards on 11-of-18 passing. But the PAT is missed. (Texas A&M, 30-6 | :16, 2nd) 

- Now, Marcel Reed with a 24-yard scramble down to the Utah State 12. 

- A&M driving inside the USU 40 inside the final minute; Marcel Reed with a couple of big-play throws.

- TOUCHDOWN TEXAS A&M. Le'Veon Moss takes it 21 yards to the house, finishing off a 6-play 63-yard drive. (Texas A&M, 24-6 | 3:18, 2nd) 

- A&M goes for it inside the USU 30 but is stuffed. But A&M will get the ball back after forcing Utah State to punt with less than seven minutes left in the half. 

- A&M gets the ball inside the Utah State 40 thanks in large part to Cashius Howell's three straight sacks.

- WOW, A&M defender Cashius Howell with three straight sacks, and Utah State is pinned deep as it will punt it away. 

- TOUCHDOWN TEXAS A&M. A&M goes 63 yards in 10 plays, capped by Marcel Reed's 1-yard keeper. Reed threw an 11-yard pass to Rueben Owens II for 11 yards to the 3, and a personal foul penalty moved the ball to the 1. (Texas A&M, 17-6 | 12:01, 2nd) 

- A&M converts on third down and they are driving, and have the ball in the red zone.

- A&M starts the second quarter with a third down play just past midfield. Marcel Reed is 3-of-7 for 59 yards but with a TD. 

FIRST QUARTER

- FIELD GOAL TEXAS A&M. Marcel Reed takes a sack on third down, and A&M will go for the field goal. They get it, as Jared Zirkel connects from 37 yards out. (Texas A&M, 10-6 | 2:55, 1st) 

- Marcel Reed with a 21-yard keeper, and A&M is now in the red zone. 

- A 15-yard pass interference penalty gives A&M a first down inside the USU 40. 

- TOUCHDOWN UTAH STATE. Utah State finishes off a 9-play 75-yard drive by going for it on fourth-and-goal at the 3, and gets it, as Anthony Garcia finds Miles Davis for the score. Utah State goes for two, but doesn't get it, keeping A&M in front. (Texas A&M, 7-6 | 7:02, 1st) 

- Utah State gets down to the A&M 20 after a 24-yard pass play. 

- TOUCHDOWN TEXAS A&M. A&M forces Utah State to punt on its first series, and needs just three plays to strike on its next possession. Marcel Reed 34 yards to Terry Bussey, and the PAT is good. (Texas A&M, 7-0 | 10:51, 1st) 

- A&M picks up a couple of first downs on its first series, but are eventually forced to punt.

- Utah State wins the toss and defers. A&M receives the opening kickoff, and Terry Bussey breaks a long return, but it is called back due to a penalty. A&M to start at its own 10-yard line.

- Marcel Reed had a solid opening game last week. Can he have another huge game in lieu of next week's game in South Bend?
