Stanford reportedly 'closing in' on next head coach image

Stanford appears to be nearing the end of its coaching search. According to a report by On3's Pete Nakos, a new hire is expected on The Farm by the close of the 2025 regular season.

The Cardinal have been operating under interim coach Frank Reich this fall after firing Troy Taylor shortly before spring practice. Stanford General manager Andrew Luck has overseen the search and is “closing in on a hire,” with an announcement possible as soon as the days following Stanford’s finale against Notre Dame.

While Luck has remained near radio silent in the process, the recent bye week was likely helpful in coming to a final decision. There has been no confirmed list of finalists either.

Stanford tries to avoid a fifth straight loss to end the year. The Cardinal sit at 3-7 with matchups ahead against rival Cal and a top-tier Notre Dame squad. A win over Cal would be huge for the program in the rivalry. It would also mark the program’s first home victory in the series since 2017.

For Luck, the next head coaching hire can't be a miss. Stanford's jump to the ACC kept them afloat during the realignment of the Pac-12, but the next consolidation might not a yield a similar result. The next coach takes over a program seeking a return to national relevance.
