TL;DR

  • Arkansas is in the final stages of its coaching search after dismissing Sam Pittman.
  • Tulane's head coach, Jon Sumrall, is a leading candidate for the Arkansas position.
  • Sumrall has a strong record at Troy and Tulane, attracting SEC interest.
  • A hiring decision for Arkansas' head coach could be made soon.

Arkansas’ coaching search appears to be nearing its conclusion as the program moves into “the final stages” of its process, according to a report by Pete Nakos.

Since dismissing Sam Pittman on September 28th after a 2-3 record, the Razorbacks have lacked a permanent head coach, with university officials dedicating recent weeks to assessing numerous prospects from The Power Four and leading Group of Five programs.

Jon Sumrall, Tulane's head coach, is now among the most frequently mentioned individuals linked to the open position.

The 43-year-old has attracted considerable attention throughout the SEC due to a swift ascent, featuring a 23-4 record at Troy with Two Sun Belt championships and promising initial achievements at Tulane. Sumrall achieved a 9-5 record in his inaugural season with The Green Wave in 2024, and Tulane is currently ranked No. 24 with an 8-2 record this fall.

Last offseason, Sumrall inked a deal worth approximately $15 million, set to expire in 2029. However, his increasing prominence has made him a target for several SEC teams.

As Arkansas concludes its preparations, a hiring decision could be made within the next few days or weeks.
