Brent Venables made it clear Saturday night that his focus resides far from rankings politics and on what defines Oklahoma. But his words and his defense still delivered a message aimed squarely at the College Football Playoff selection committee.
The Sooners reminded No. 8 in the latest CFP rankings. That was all before a 17-13 win over LSU, which should result in OU's first CFP invitation since 2019. While no team seeded above OU took a loss this weekend, the Sooners strengthened their credentials through their identity of a tough defense that preforms under pressure.
When asked if Oklahoma deserves a first-round home playoff game, Venables deflected. “I’d just love an invitation,” he said. “I don’t care if it’s on the road. Wherever they ask us to play, we’ll show up.”
His confidence arrived anyway and was strong.
“If anything we’re comfortable when it ain’t going great, when it’s tight,” Venables said. “Elite players, elite coaches. This team knows how to punch back.”
OU’s case is stout. Ole Miss directly ahead at No. 7 is trying to navigate instability with coach Lane Kiffin heading to LSU. That uncertainty could impact the Rebels’ standing before Selection Sunday.
Even without upward movement, OU is poised to host a CFP opener from the 5-8 seed window. Venables believes the Sooners were built for this exact blueprint.
The bracket unveil arrives Dec. 7. Oklahoma expects a fight. Home or road, Venables insists they’re ready to battle.
