Twenty-two years after meeting under the lights with the national championship trophy twinkling in the distance, Ohio State and Miami finally get a chance to rekindle their rivalry in the College Football Playoff.
The two programs are among the most successful in college football history, claiming 14 national titles between them. They are now more than two decades removed from one of the sport’s most famous — or infamous — games, a national championship showdown in which the Buckeyes defeated the Hurricanes following a contentious pass interference call.
After years of biding its time, Miami finally has its chance at revenge. The Hurricanes will face off against Ohio State in the quarterfinals of this year’s College Football Playoff, hoping to knock off one of the country’s most dominant sides and continue their resurgence.
The Buckeyes conjured wonderment in Big Ten play, using their championship pedigree and nous to vanquish all comers — with the exception of No. 1 Indiana. Julian Sayin was a Heisman finalist, Jeremiah Smith’s performances inspire sonnets and soliloquies, and Caleb Downs continues to draw first-round buzz. There hasn’t been a repeat national title winner since Georgia in 2021 and 2022, but Ryan Day’s side looks capable of accomplishing that feat.
Lined up opposite Ohio State is Miami, a controversial postseason participant bolstered by its defense. Reuben Bain tore up Texas A&M in the first round of the CFP, tallying three sacks against the Aggies’ highly touted offensive line. Viewed by some as the presumptive No. 1 pick, another Bain masterpiece could set the Hurricanes up for one of the CFP’s biggest upsets.
