The longtime face of Cowboys football appeared in a new promotional video for Oklahoma State Hockey, delivering his first public comments in months. Instead of discussing his dismissal or hinting at a next chapter, Gundy leaned into supporting OSU’s club program.
“Oklahoma State fans, I’m hearing we’re a hockey school now,” Gundy said. “How about that. Oklahoma State hockey. You guys better get your tickets right now to Bedlam February 28th. I need to come see that myself. I’m excited. I like me some hockey. I’m fired up. Go Pokes hockey. I love that.”

Gundy’s appearance carries weight because of his deep roots in Stillwater. He has been connected to Oklahoma State football for all but four years since 1986, when he first arrived as a freshman quarterback. After stints as an assistant and coordinator, he was named head coach in 2005 and held the job for nearly two decades before being fired earlier this fall.
His return comes as Oklahoma State hockey continues to grow. The modern program re-launched in 2021 and competes in the ACHA, partnering with the Tulsa Oilers and the Tulsa Sports Commission to build Bedlam on Ice into a yearly showcase. OSU won the event in 2023 with a 7-2 victory in front of more than 7,300 fans, but OU controlled the most recent meeting, an 11-1 result in the 2025 matchup at BOK Center.

Now attention turns to February 28, where the rematch suddenly carries an unexpected storyline. Gundy, silent since his firing, chose this moment and this sport to speak again.
And in a rivalry that embraces unpredictability, this might be the most fitting twist yet.
