Josh Allen will add another milestone to his decorated career this fall.

The University of Wyoming announced it will retire Allen’s No. 17 jersey during halftime of the Cowboys’ Nov. 22 game against Nevada. The Buffalo Bills quarterback  will become the first player in program history to receive the honor.

The reigning NFL MVP will return to Laramie for the ceremony while taking advantage of Buffalo’s weekend off following a Thursday night matchup against Houston. He delivered the news in a video message to fans, saying he was “excited to be back in Laramie” and to share the moment with the WYO faithful.

The path to this recognition has been anything but conventional for Allen. He entered the college ranks as a no-star recruit, beginning at Reedley College in California before transferring to Wyoming in 2015. The Pokes happened to be his only offer from the JUCO level.

After an early injury setback, he led the Cowboys to consecutive eight-win seasons, tallying over 5,000 passing yards, 57 total touchdowns, and earning MVP honors in the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. His performance elevated him to the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the highest selection in school history.

Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman called the jersey retirement “a wonderful day for the state of Wyoming." He also recognized Allen as the program’s most visible ambassador.

Buffalo kicks off the season Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC).
