James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III is set to explore his next opportunity, as he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal. After helping deliver one of the most successful seasons in program history, Barnett’s decision marks the end of a memorable chapter in Harrisonburg.

Barnett was the steady leader under center all season for JMU, guiding the Dukes to a 12–2 record and a Sun Belt Championship. James Madison went undefeated in conference play before earning a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Dukes’ historic run came to a close with a 51–34 loss to Oregon, but the season firmly established JMU as a national contender.

Individually, Barnett was a major reason for that success. He threw for 2,806 yards while completing just under 60 percent of his passes, accounting for 23 touchdowns through the air and eight interceptions. His impact went beyond passing, as he also became one of the team’s most reliable runners. Barnett rushed for 589 yards and scored 15 touchdowns on the ground, finishing as the Dukes’ second-leading rusher and proving to be a true dual-threat quarterback.

His move to the portal comes at a time of transition for the program. Former head coach Bob Chesney has accepted the head coaching position at UCLA, changing the direction of JMU football moving forward. While that connection briefly raised questions about a possible reunion, UCLA’s starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava has re-signed with the Bruins, leaving Barnett’s next stop wide open.

Coming out of high school, Barnett arrived at JMU without much national attention. As a three-star recruit in the 2022 class, he was ranked outside the top 1,700 prospects and listed as the No. 116 quarterback in his class. Since then, he has clearly outplayed those expectations, developing into a proven leader on a playoff team.

The NCAA transfer portal opens Jan. 2 and will remain open through Jan. 16, giving Barnett time to evaluate his options and speak with interested programs. With postseason experience and the ability to make plays in multiple ways, Barnett is expected to be one of the more attractive quarterbacks available this cycle.

Whats Next for Barnett

Where Barnett lands next season will be one of the more interesting quarterback storylines to watch as the transfer window opens. With proven playoff experience and dual-threat ability, Barnett is expected to draw strong interest as one of the top quarterbacks available in the portal. Look for teams like Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Florida State, Texas Tech, Miami, and even LSU to keep their eyes out for Barnett in the portal.
