ESPN analyst Greg McElroy believes Virginia Tech may have landed the perfect fit in new head coach James Franklin. He also sees a fast rise in the ACC.
Franklin was introduced Nov. 17 following his dismissal from Penn State after three straight losses, ending a 12-year tenure in Happy Valley.
McElroy went on the Always College Football podcast Tuesday to explain how the Hokies capitalized on an opportunity once it became clear Franklin was unlikely to land openings at Florida or LSU.
“What was intriguing about this is that James Franklin was going to have options,” McElroy said. “Once he realized those weren’t going to be Florida or LSU, it became more realistic. ‘Hey, I’ll take Virginia Tech.’ And it’s been really good.”
McElroy said Franklin’s proven recruiting ties gives VA Tech an immediate advantage. Several Penn State commitments have already shown interest in following Franklin to Blacksburg.
Franklin compiled a 104-45 record at Penn State, winning the 2016 Big Ten title and reaching the College Football Playoff last year.
“Will they make playoff runs or win a national championship? I don’t know, McElroy added. "But of the candidates available, Virginia Tech hired the best one.”
