As Haynes King ran away from the Colorado Buffaloes' defense, with just more than a minute left, with just 45 yards to travel to reach the end zone and a season-opening victory, he made NCAA football history.
Only one player this century has ever opened a season with a game as statistically prolific as King, and it had to feel good as Georgia Tech and its QB knocked off the always-intriguing Deion Sanders-led Colorado team, 27-20.
These were King's final stats:
- 13-for-20 passing
- 143 passing yards (1 INT)
- 19 carries
- 156 rushing yards
- 3 rushing touchdowns
The only other FBS player to do that this century, according to OptaStats, was Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma in 2019 - specifically ending with 140 passing, 140 rushing and three rushing TDs.
King is now in his sixth year of college football and ready to lead the Yellow Jackets to a fitting finale to his career.
He spent three seasons at Texas A&M, only seeing any substantial play time in his third campaign.
Since coming to Georgia Tech in 2023, King has been the starter.
Entering this season, King had thrown for 41 TDs at Georgia Tech and run for another 24.
And he's got this campaign off to a fine start, too.
The Yellow Jackets get an easy one next week against Gardner-Webb, but then King and Georgia Tech will get their big test. They host Clemson on Sept. 13, and King will have to be ready.
