Pittsburgh held off No. 15 Georgia Tech 42-28 on Saturday night to stay alive in the Atlantic Coast Conference title race. On the other hand, the Yellow Jackets are now eliminated from contention.
Pitt (8-3, 6-1 ACC) surged to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter behind Turner’s explosive rushing and a sharp performance from quarterback Mason Heintschel, who finished 20-of-27 for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
But Georgia Tech (9-2, 6-2) clawed back, trimming the deficit to 35-28 midway through the fourth quarter before Turner sealed the win with a 56-yard touchdown run with 2:41 remaining.
Haynes King completed 27-of-41 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns to Isiah Canion, but threw two costly interceptions as Georgia Tech’s bid for an ACC championship appearance ended despite entering the night with a win-and-in opportunity.
Ja’Kyrian Turner ran for 201 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Johnson added six receptions for 91 yards and a score for the Panthers, who kept their ACC title hopes alive.
Pitt will reach the conference championship game for the first time since 2021 if it wins its regular-season finale and either Virginia or SMU loses next week.
