Chris (CJ) Newell Jr., a 5’10” defensive back from Glenville High School who also contributes on offense, has announced his commitment to Bowling Green State University, becoming the ninth 3-star pledge in the Falcons’ 2026 class.

Newell, a versatile playmaker for the storied Cleveland program, shared his decision on social media with the message: “I’m home!!!!! Thank you God.” His announcement graphic featured Bowling Green’s orange and brown, along with the “Battle of I-75” trophy that symbolizes the program’s rivalry with Toledo.

The rising junior had drawn recruiting interest from Kent State, Buffalo, Colorado State, Akron, and others before choosing Bowling Green. His commitment marks another significant step forward for Eddie George, the College Football Hall of Famer, 1995 Heisman Trophy winner, and Ohio State Buckeyes legend who is in his first season as Falcons head coach. Securing a defensive back from one of Ohio’s most prestigious high school programs underscores George’s ability to build recruiting momentum quickly.

Newell follows his Glenville teammate, wide receiver Pauly Sadler, who committed to Bowling Green earlier this summer. Together, their pledges establish early momentum for a potential Glenville-to-BGSU pipeline under George’s leadership.

Glenville, guided by longtime coach Ted Ginn Sr., has produced a steady stream of NFL talent including Ted Ginn Jr., Marshon Lattimore, Troy Smith, Donte Whitner, Coby Bryant, Frank Clark, and more. Newell now looks to add his name to that tradition while carving out his path in the Mid-American Conference.

For Bowling Green, this signifies more than merely another commitment. George is assembling one of the most impressive classes in the MAC for 2026, and this is only the start.
