College football returns to Tampa on Thursday night with a matchup that brings together two programs aiming to make early statements. No. 25 Boise State heads east to face South Florida at Raymond James Stadium in a clash that pairs a playoff-tested team with a rising program eager to prove it belongs on the big stage.

This will be the first game for Boise State without Ashton Jeanty, the Heisman runner-up whose highlight-filled 2024 season carried the Broncos all the way to the College Football Playoff. On the other side, USF brings back star quarterback Byrum Brown, who is fully healthy after a year cut short by injury. The humid Florida night sets the scene for what should be a great opening game between the Broncos and Bulls.

Boise State Broncos

Boise State went 12-2 last season, leaning heavily on Jeanty’s record-breaking rushing attack. His departure leaves a major hole, but coach Spencer Danielson has already pointed out that the Broncos’ philosophy will not change. Malik Sherrod, a transfer from Fresno State, and redshirt freshman Sire Gaines will try to keep the running game rolling.

Quarterback Maddux Madsen provides stability with his return. He threw for just over 3,000 yards in 2024 with 23 touchdowns and only six interceptions, showing poise against some of the toughest defenses in the country. While Jeanty’s absence changes the offensive identity, Madsen’s experience and leadership give Boise State confidence in their ability to adapt.

Defensively, the Broncos remain built around discipline and run-stopping. Danielson has emphasized the importance of controlling the line of scrimmage, something Boise has traditionally done well in big games. The biggest question will be whether the defense can adjust to the speed and playmaking ability that South Florida brings at quarterback.

South Florida Bulls

South Florida finished 7-6 last year and capped the season with a thrilling five-overtime win against San Jose State in the Hawaii Bowl. Under coach Alex Golesh, the Bulls have strung together back-to-back bowl victories and now seek a true breakthrough moment against a ranked opponent.

That opportunity rests largely on the shoulders of Byrum Brown. In 2023, he was one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the country, throwing for over 3,200 yards and 26 touchdowns while also rushing for 11 scores. His injury last fall slowed the Bulls’ progress, but his return changes everything. A healthy Brown makes USF dangerous against any opponent, especially at home under the lights.

Golesh has embraced a tough schedule to start the season, and he knows the challenge is steep. But with a dynamic quarterback, an improving defense, and the energy of their home crowd, South Florida has every reason to believe it can push Boise State to the limit.

Triller to open 2025

The opener in Tampa gives both teams a chance to set the tone for the season. Boise State begins life without Jeanty, relying on a new running back duo and the steady hand of Madsen. South Florida, with Brown back in command, is eager to prove it is ready to step into the national conversation.

This should be a great kick-off to the first Thursday of the College Football season!
