Auburn's Jahquez Robinson ejected after controversial targeting call in Iron Bowl image

TL;DR

  • Jahquez Robinson of Auburn was ejected for targeting on Alabama's Ty Simpson.
  • The targeting call was confirmed after a booth review prompted by a replay official.
  • ESPN rules analyst Bill Lemonnier disagreed with the targeting call, citing lack of forcible contact.
  • The penalty meant Robinson would also miss the first half of Auburn's next bowl game.

SEC officials made another contentious decision on Saturday during the Iron Bowl. Jahquez Robinson of Auburn was removed from the game following minor contact with Alabama's Ty Simpson while on a blitz.

The broadcast team discussed the play as it unfolded. Robinson received a penalty for what was initially deemed roughing the passer, but was later confirmed as targeting following a booth review prompted by a replay official.

ESPN rules analyst Bill Lemonnier immediately disagreed with the call and review. “I don’t have forcible contact,” Lemonnier said. “I wouldn’t go targeting on that.”

Chris Fowler pointed out that much of the contact seemed to strike below the helmet, intensifying the dispute. The reversed decision led to Robinson's removal from the match.

As the penalty was upheld during the latter part of the game, Robinson would also be sidelined for the initial half of Auburn's subsequent bowl contest should the team qualify, according to NCAA regulations.

Auburn was behind when the play occurred, and the moment capped off a competitive evening marked by rough play, reviews, and differing views on whether the action was deliberate or accidental.

The game was tied at 20 with eight minutes left.
