To no one's surprise, Auburn has fired head coach Hugh Freeze after three seasons.
Freeze sounded like he knew the end was coming after Auburn's embarrassing loss to the Kentucky Wildcats Saturday night, 10-3, giving the Wildcats their first SEC win of the season.
He once again pleaded for patience because several of Aubun's losses have been close losses, but clearly, the administration has had enough and decided to move on from him
Auburn will name defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin as the interim head coach, sources tell @CBSSports.
Freeze's buyout was only $15 million, that's cheap considering the recent buyout of Brian Kelly at LSU who was owed nearly $60 million.
The Tigers are 4-5 overall and 1-5 in the SEC with their only win coming against Arkansas last week. His overall record, however is 15-19 and 6-16 in the SEC including being 0-3 against rivial Alabama.
The Tigers remaining schedule is games at Vanderbilt, hosting Mercer and of course the Iron Bowl against Alabama at Jordan-Hare.
The question now is who do the Tigers turn to now that Freeze is gone. Of course Lane Kiffin seems to be the favorite of several SEC schools but other names that may appear is former Penn State and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin, former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher and former NFL head coach John Gruden who has said recently he would love to coach in the SEC.
You have to wonder with Gruden, however, if his age will be a factor in hiring him and he also another controversial figure who is in a middle of a lawsuit with the NFL.
Freeze was labled as an offensive genius but his team is near the bottom of scoring in the SEC.
