It wasn't quite the day Arch Manning and Texas fans were hoping for.

Manning made his much-ballyhooed debut as the Longhorns' new starting quarterback Saturday afternoon at defending national champion Ohio State. But, despite a late surge, Manning and the Horns were held in check by the Buckeyes, who held on for a 14-7 win at "The Horseshoe."

After generally waiting in the wings behind Quinn Ewers, Manning finally got his chance to take over as the Longhorns' QB1.

He took over the reins for the team that’s the preseason No. 1-ranked team in the AP poll. Not to mention Manning was going up against the squad that ended Manning - and Texas’ - season last January in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

ARCH MANNING GRADES: Hyped Texas QB limited by dominating Ohio State defense

Manning, the redshirt sophomore who is also well known because of his famous uncles (Peyton and Eli) and grandfather (Archie), threw for 939 yards and nine TDs last season on 61-of-90 passing. He has not thrown a pass since Texas’ win against Florida in early November, as Ewers guided the Horns through their appearance in the SEC Championship Game and their CFP run.

Manning finished the day going 17-of-30 passing for 170 yards. He did throw a late touchdown pass to Parker Livingstone with 3:28 left that cut Ohio State's lead to seven.

Texas then got the ball back after forcing Ohio State to punt. But on a fourth-down play from midfield, Manning faced heavy pressure and quickly released the ball. It was caught by a Texas receiver, but he was tackled well short of the first down, as the Buckeyes took over with 1:27 left and were able to run out the clock.

The Sporting News tracked Manning’s performance, along with the best moments and highlights of his start against the defending national champion Buckeyes.
