Texas’ College Football Playoff aspirations took a hit following the Longhorns’ humbling defeat to Georgia, a loss that exposed vulnerabilities despite flashes of promise from Arch Manning.

While a single loss doesn’t eliminate a CFP contender, a blowout loss to a fellow top-tier team significantly damages Texas’ chances. The selection committee values strong finishes and “good losses,” but a decisive defeat raises serious questions about the Longhorns’ defensive capabilities and consistency in high-stakes situations. Manning, while highly touted, now faces the challenge of not only leading his team to win out but doing so convincingly to impress the committee and offset the Georgia loss.

Texas and Manning aren’t entirely out of the picture, but their path to the CFP now depends on both their own performance and significant external help. First, they must win their remaining games, starting against Arkansas in Austin on Saturday. Beyond that, multiple highly ranked teams would need to suffer losses — ideally one-loss teams falling to unranked or low-ranked opponents — to clear a path back into the top four. The committee will weigh Texas’ strength of schedule and overall body of work, including the Georgia game, against other one-loss contenders.

For Manning and the Longhorns, the priority must shift from simply competing to dominating, aiming for high-margin victories to show they are playing their best football at the most critical point of the season.

4:40 p.m.:  Manning caught a touchdown from Livingstone on the second drive, and now, he throws one to his roommate.

On 1st & 10, Manning finds a wide open Livingstone on the left side of the field, who walks in for a 54-yard touchdown. It's Manning's third of the game, and Texas is up 21-13.

The quarterback is 8-for-9 for 191 yards and two touchdowns in the air.

4:39 p.m.:  After Arkansas responded with a touchdown to make the game 14-13, Manning once again finds Wingo for 12 yards to get the drive going.

4:24 p.m.:  Manning puts another touchdown on the board, but not how you think.

On 2nd & goal, Steve Sarkisian draws a jet sweep to Manning's roommate Parker Livingstone, who passes it to Manning, who is standing wide open in the end zone.

Texas has scored two touchdowns on two drives, Manning contributing to both. It's the first receiving touchdown of his collegiate career.

4:18 p.m.:  The Texas offense is putting on a clinic to open the game.

Manning completes his sixth straight pass to open the game, this time to the tight end Jack Endries for 14 yards. The Longhorns are inside the five-yard line.

4:17 p.m.: Manning is 5-for-5 for 111 yards and a touchdown to open the game.

Here, he connects with Mosley V for 25 yards down to the Arkansas 41.

4:15 p.m.:  After a Tre Wisner run went for no gain, Manning connects with Wingo on a curl route, and the receiver turns upfield and takes it for a first down.

Manning is 4-for-4 to start the game.

4:10 p.m.:  Arkansas has scored two field goals on two drives.

Texas leads 7-6 as Manning and Texas look to follow up on the successful opening drive.

Manning, Texas strike fast to take 7-3 lead

3:59 p.m.:  One drive, one touchdown for Manning and Texas.

After two first downs on the first four plays, Manning lobs one up to a wide open Deandre Moore Jr. For a 46-yard score.

Texas leads 7-3 after a perfect drive from Manning and co. The quarterback was 3-3 for 71 yards and a touchdown on the first drive.

3:57 p.m.:  Manning's first two passes are complete to his two favorite receivers.

First, he hits Ryan Wingo on a screen pass, then Emmett Mosley V on a curl route. The Longhorns move the chains.

3:54 p.m.:  Arkansas kicks a field goal on the first drive of the game, taking a 3-0 lead.

This is the first time Texas has trailed at home in the entire 2025 season as Manning and the offense gets ready to come on the field.

3:50 p.m.:  Texas has kicked off and we are underway in Austin.

Manning and the Longhorns offense will wait there turn, with Taylen Green and Arkansas getting the ball first.

3:17 p.m.:  Kickoff is almost here, with Texas looking to get back in the win column.

The Longhorns sit at 7-3 on the season and 4-2 in the SEC.

2:58 p.m.:  Texas is back at Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium for the first time since a Nov. 1 win against Vanderbilt.

This season, the Longhorns are undefeated in Austin, with a record of 4-0 while outscoring opponents 154-48. 

2:22 p.m.:  Manning and Texas have arrived ahead of a 3:30 p.m. Kickoff vs. Arkansas.

The No. 17 Longhorns are looking to bounce back from a 35-10 loss to Georgia in Athens. Though the College Football Playoff chances are slim, Manning and Texas have a chance to end the season strong with two home wins.
