Arch Manning injury update

Manning sustained a concussion during Texas' overtime win over Mississippi State on Saturday, Oct. 25, according to ESPN sources.

He remained in the medical tent when the game ended, and his status moving forward is dependent on future evaluations.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed on Monday that Manning did, in fact, sustain a concussion and is in concussion protocol to begin the week.

Sarkisian said that Manning practiced with the team on both Wednesday and Thursday, although he remains in the protocol.

Manning has to clear all steps of protocol in order to suit up on Saturday.

College football concussion protocol

The concussion protocol in college football is a multi-step process for players who are confirmed to have a concussion.

The return-to-play process is supervised and requires a physician's clearance as the final step. These steps include light aerobic exercise, sport-specific exercise without head impact, and non-contact practice with progressive resistance before unrestricted training.

The affected player must complete each step without experiencing any concussion symptoms.

Who is Matthew Caldwell?

Caldwell is a fifth-year quarterback who is in his first season at Texas. He is second on the Longhorns' QB depth chart behind Manning.

Before playing at Texas, Caldwell played at three other schools. He spent the 2024 season at Troy and, before that, spent time at Gardner-Webb and Jacksonville State.

Caldwell is from Auburn, Ala., and attended Auburn High School.
