Alex Golesh didn’t want to hear about the margin. He wanted to talk about the message.
“The story of the game’s really pretty simple,” he said. “We were down 14–7. We had three turnovers in the first quarter. You have three turnovers in the first quarter, it’s going to be hard to beat anybody. But I’ll give our kids a ton of credit, we go on a 28–0 run there to go up 42–21. We came out of the half just rocking.”
South Florida erupted for 63 points and 582 total yards, the program’s highest output since 2016. Quarterback Byrum Brown completed 22 of 28 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns, adding 82 rushing yards and two more scores.

“I think where we’ve changed as a program is there’s no ‘here we go again’ moments,” Golesh said. “There truly was no flinch. I walked over to Byrum to make sure he was good. He just smiled, ‘Coach, call the next play.’”
Freshman receiver Jeremiah Koger hauled in four catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns. “You saw Jeremiah step up in a huge way,” Golesh said. “Christian Neptune stepped up in a huge way. Fred Gaskin, that dude was all over the place.”
South Florida’s defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions. “Defensively, they caused four turnovers against a really good offense,” Golesh said. “That’s offense and defense. That’s the identity of our program.”
Then came the reprimand after some showboating occurred on a fumble return for a touchdown. “Jhalyn Shuler on his touchdown, I was about as hot as I’ve been with his response and the lack of humility,” Golesh said. “That’s a sign of really, really bad football teams and that can’t be us. That’s on me.”

“Humility is the absolute key in this whole thing,” he added. “Enjoy it, rest tomorrow, and then go be 1–0 again next week.”
