Should the results hold on Saturday evening, with Virginia defeating Virginia Tech and Cal besting SMU, the ACC would feature 7-5 Duke in its conference championship contest based on tiebreakers.
The Blue Devils were set to face the Cavaliers, a scenario that might prove detrimental to the ACC's College Football Playoff aspirations should Duke then manage to defeat UVA.
National college football writer Nicole Auerbach thinks the ACC should punt on that scenario.

In a Saturday night post on X, Auerbach implored the league to disregard its tiebreaker rules and advance Miami to the conference championship.
This could be an unpopular viewpoint, but were I the ACC, and if Cal were to defeat SMU, I'd disregard the tiebreaker rules and select Miami to compete in the ACC championship game against Virginia.

Sure, on the surface, that feels like a terrible precedent to set.
But the idea is to make sure the ACC gets a berth in the CFP.
Should Duke secure the league title, it's conceivable that two champions from Group of 5 conferences would qualify while Duke would not, resulting in the ACC being excluded.
Should the ACC send Miami to the title game against Virginia, one of those teams would certainly secure a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Would it be fair to Duke? Not on paper, no.
But would it be best for the ACC and its postseason representation? Yes.
It remains uncertain if this possibility is even viable, yet it's undeniably intriguing to contemplate.
