The LSU Tigers survived a heavyweight opening bout with a team that PFF ranked number one at the time, so perhaps it's not shocking that LSU has climbed all the way to number two in the outlet's rankings this week.
However, after a narrow victory and then a disappointing outing, albeit in a win, over Louisiana Tech, it's hard to justify ranking them as the second-best team in college even now. They've managed a measly 40 points on the season and have been carried by a defense that took advantage of a good matchup Saturday.
PFF's Max Chadwick said, "LSU experienced a slight hangover from its season-opening victory over Clemson, beating Louisiana Tech 23-7 despite being favored by 36.5 points. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had a solid performance, posting a 76.7 passing grade with three big-time throws and two turnover-worthy plays. The Tigers have a big game in Week 3 at home against Florida."
This week's matchup with a recently upset Florida squad should tell us where LSU really is, but for now, they don't look like the number two team in the country. They were ranked ahead of:
- Penn State
- Miami
- Oregon
- Georgia
- Florida State
There were some teams that might've had a stronger case, but PFF believes in the Tigers even though they haven't exactly looked dominant through the first two weeks of the season.
