TL;DR

  • LSU reportedly preparing a record-breaking contract for Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin.
  • The proposed deal could exceed $13 million annually, making Kiffin one of the highest-paid coaches.
  • LSU may consider a shorter contract duration to mitigate potential buyout costs.
  • Ole Miss has reportedly set a deadline for Kiffin's decision before the Egg Bowl.

Sources indicate LSU is reportedly readying a record-breaking contract proposal for Lane Kiffin, as the Tigers are stepping up their efforts to secure the Ole Miss head coach, as reported by WJOX Radio on Thursday.

Wilson Alexander of The Advocate told “McElroy and Cubelic” that LSU is assembling “a very large financial package” designed to make Kiffin one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.

“I think that they would make him… maybe over $13 million [annually], something like that,” Alexander said. Previous reports say that LSU is prepared to offer a deal that could make Kiffin the single highest-paid coach in the sport.

According to USA TODAY Sports, Georgia's Kirby Smart is currently the highest-paid coach in the country, earning $13.2 million annually. However, LSU's recent legal dispute with ex-coach Brian Kelly over a $54 million termination payout could impact how future contracts are structured. Alexander noted that LSU representatives are contemplating a shorter contract duration to reduce potential buyout costs if an agreement doesn't materialize.

Kiffin has reportedly been given a deadline by Ole Miss to announce his intentions prior to the Nov. 28 Egg Bowl against Mississippi State, suggesting he might not lead the Rebels in the College Football Playoff.

Despite Kiffin's denials of an ultimatum, considerable strain persists as a premier coaching search in the sport approaches a crucial decision from the veteran coach.
